Get out your slide rules boys and girls, because understanding ticket pricing and deciding which option is best for you requires some hard thinking. Ticket prices are not cheap, so this is important.
Disney delivers excellent value for what you pay, but with prices as high as they are, why purchase more than what you're going to use?
There are 3 main points to keep in mind:
- Only buy what you're pretty sure you're going to use
- Buy in advance - there's no reason to pay more and wait in line to do it, when you can easily order online or at your local Disney Store beforehand
- Only buy your tickets from Disney or licensed ticket brokers. Do NOT buy someone's partially used ticket from eBay or anywhere else. Besides the fact that Disney tickets are non-transferrable, it's very likely you'll be ripped off. A reputable broker will not sell partially used tickets.
Deciding What to Buy
Disney Ticket Options
- Magic Your Way base tickets - admission to one of the four major parks per day
- Annual Passes - available in the standard (4 parks only) or premium (4 parks plus water parks, Disney Quest & Pleasure Is.) varieties
- Individual admissions - available for purchase at the gate or from hotel guest services (not online) for Typhoon Lagoon, Blizzard Beach, Disney Quest & Pleasure Island)
- Special Passes - for repeat visits to the water parks, Disney Quest & Pleasure Island
- Florida Resident tickets - annual and season passes for Florida residents only
Ticket Tips
If you're only visiting for 1 day, think twice about adding on the Park Hopper option and don't buy the Magic Plus option (it's actually cheaper to pay separate admission).
For 2 or more days at Disney World, definitely go for the Park Hopper option, unless you know for sure you only want to visit one park per day.
If you'll use 2 or more of your "Magic Plus" options, it's a very good deal. But if you'll only use one, it's cheaper to buy individual admissions.
You can use the "Magic Plus" option as an inexpensive way to stretch the length of your vacation. For example, on a 7 day vacation, you can purchase a 4 day Magic Your Way ticket with the "plus" option (which gives you 3 admissions to the water parks, Disney Quest and Pleasure Island)--with this ticket you can go to the theme parks on 4 of the days, and visit any 3 of the plus locations on the other three days.
Consider buying an Annual Pass if you'll be visiting for 10 days or more, or if you plan to visit 2 or more times in a year. You're not saving on theme park admissions on an annual pass vs. 10-day MYW ticket, but you can save plenty on your Disney Resort from the deep discounts offered to Annual Pass holders. And only one person in your party needs to have the Annual Pass to qualify for the hotel discount.
In general, discounts on Disney World tickets are small (a few dollars) and not widely available. If you have a large number in your party, it will still pay to shop around.
Disney Vacation Club (DVC) members can purchase discounted Annual Passes from Disney
AAA Members can purchase discounted tickets from AAA only (Disney does not offer such a discount)
Licensed ticket brokers in Florida also offer discounts on park tickets
Florida residents can purchase special Annual & Season passes at discounted rates direct from Disney
- Park Hopper option - go to as many of the four parks as you like in one day
- Magic Plus option - depending on the length of you base ticket, add 2-5 visits to Typhoon Lagoon, Blizzard Beach, Disney Quest and Pleasure Island
- No Expiration option - used days on your ticket will not expire
