There are nearly 20 hotels on Disney property to choose from--and dozens more located off property. Deciding to stay with Disney is primarily a matter of personal choice and budget. Here are some benfits of each to consider:
While Disney hotel guests are welcome at the other Disney resorts, swimming privileges are not transferrable.
If you aren't staying with Disney, it is highly recommended you rent a car. Your hotel may offer a free shuttle, but schedules are limited.
Deciding to Stay On or Off Disney Property
Disney Resorts
- Additional time in the parks with the Extra Magic Hour program
- Free access to the Disney transporation system
- Free parking at Disney theme parks and water parks
- Closest locations to the Disney parks
- Superior service, cleanliness and attention to detail
- Total immersion in the Disney "magic"
Off Property Hotels
- Less expensive room prices are usually available
- For those who find 24-hour a day Disney too much, a respite away from it all
- A larger and less expensive selection of restaurants
- Take advantage of travel points programs you may belong to
"Quasi" Disney Hotels
There are a number of hotels that are not run by Disney that have some or all of the Disney resort priviledges:
Swan & Dolphin Resorts: Located together in the Epcot Resort area, these deluxe hotels, run by Starwood Hotels, are located on Disney property and guests have all the privileges of Disney resort guests. Some excellent bargain room rates are found here during the slow season. Disney does not manage or accept reservations for these resorts, so the "Magic Your Way" packages are not available here.
Downtown Disney Resorts: Seven chain hotels make up the Downtown Disney resort area (Wyndham Palace, Grosvenor Resort, Hilton, Hotel Royal Plaza, Holiday Inn of Walt Disney World, Lake Buena Vista Resort & Doubletree Guest Suites). Their main advantage is their close proximity to Downtown Disney and the Disney parks. Only guests of the Hilton get to take advantage of the Extra Magic Hour program. Each hotel contracts privately for their transportation to the parks.
