Disney's Port Orleans French Quarter Resort
Picking a favorite or "best" Disney hotel is as impossible as picking a favorite child, because they are each unique. Across the board, Disney hotels are all top-notch, even the value resorts. That said, here are my favorites in each category:
Value Resort: All Star Movies
The value resorts often get a bad rap because their theming is not as refined as the other resorts, rooms are small, and recreation is limited. But for starting at $77 a night, you truly can't beat the value.
All Star Movies has the most Disney-esque theming, with large Disney movie icons and two pools for swimming. Request rooms in the Fantasia buildings that don't face the pool for a quiet location that's a quick walk to Cinema, which houses the food court and bus stop.
Moderate Resort: Port Orleans French Quarter
All of the moderate resorts have unique, well carried out themes, beautiful landscaping and many recreation choices. Rooms are slightly larger than at the value resorts and full service dining is available if you're tired of the food court.
My favorite moderate, and I've stayed at them all, is Port Orleans French Quarter.
All of the moderates are comparable in their rooms, dining, and amenities. What makes the French Quarter stand out in my mind is it's smaller size (approximately 1000 rooms, as opposed to 2000 at the other moderates). Disney is so large, that it's nice to come "home" to a smaller hotel at the end of the day. The pool is not as elaborate as the others moderates, but Ol' Man Swimming Hole at the Port Orleans Riverside is just a short walk away. Riverside runs a close second as a favorite moderate resort.
Deluxe Resort: Beach Club Resort
I have two choices here, depending on whether you have young children or not.
For families with older kids or no kids, my hands down pick is the Beach Club. The Cape Cod beach resort theme is beautifully carried out. It shares the best pool on Disney property, Stormalong Bay, with the Yacht Club. You can walk to Epcot and to the Boardwalk, with all of the eating and entertainment options the two offer. It's simply a great deluxe hotel in the perfect location.
Now, if you've got little ones and plan to spend the bulk of your vacation at the Magic Kingdom, the Polynesian is a great choice. Rooms are large, the resort is located right on the monorail, and the pool area is fabulous. I love the ambience walking around this resort at night with the Hawaiian music playing and tiki torches burning.
Honorable mention: Animal Kingdom Lodge, a must for animal lovers--watch the animals right from your hotel room window.
